The construction of this 12 km Sonamarg Tunnel, which has been completed in ‘Jannat’, has cost Rs 2700 crore. This tunnel connecting Sonamarg and Gagangir is situated at an altitude of 8,650 feet. It has a 7.5 meter wide parallel track for emergency situations. Along with connecting Ladakh by road throughout the year, this tunnel will play an important role in the country’s defense needs and regional development.

Earlier it used to take more than 1 hour between Gagangir to Sonamarg on Srinagar-Leh Highway. Due to this tunnel, now this distance can be covered in 15 minutes. Apart from this, the speed of vehicles will also increase from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr. Earlier it took 3 to 4 hours to cross this inaccessible hilly area. Now this distance will be covered in just 45 minutes.

This tunnel is built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method. In this process, along with digging the tunnel, its debris is also removed. As the path inside is made by removing the debris, the tunnel wall is also prepared in the same way. This eliminates the risk of the mountains cracking. In NATM technology, before the tunnel work starts, the mountain, its surrounding climate and soil are examined.
