The central government will build a third launch pad at the rocket launching center of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. It will be built at a cost of Rs 3985 crore. This decision will help in taking forward the New Generation Launch Vehicle program. Historic missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan have been launched from Srihirkota. This launch pad will serve as a backup (standby) for the second launch pad in Sriharikota.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that this is ISRO’s target under the Third Launch Pad Project (TLP). Infrastructure for next generation launch vehicles (NGLV) should be established in Sriharikota. One of the reasons behind launching this project is that ISRO can increase the launch capacity for Indian human spaceflight missions in the future. This will help in taking India’s space program to new heights.

The third launch pad project has been targeted to be completed in 48 months or 4 years. The third launch pad will be designed to support not only NGLVs but also LVM3 vehicles, including semicryogenic stages and extended versions of NGLVs.
