Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has voiced his support for the BCCI’s decision to appoint Shubman Gill as India’s Test captain, a choice that sparked considerable debate over the alternative of Jasprit Bumrah. Ponting believes Gill’s full-time availability and demonstrated leadership qualities make him the right choice for the role. Bumrah, who captained India in three Test matches, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he led the team to victory in Perth, was sidelined by a back injury during the Sydney Test, ruling him out of the Champions Trophy.
Speaking on the ICC review, Ponting emphasized the importance of a consistently available captain and praised Gill’s leadership during the IPL 2025 season. He urged the selectors to provide Gill with long-term backing, suggesting the transition came at an opportune moment for Indian cricket. “I actually think it’s the right move,” Ponting stated, acknowledging the differing opinions of some pundits. He reasoned that Bumrah’s recent injury struggles could hinder his ability to lead effectively, making Gill the more suitable choice. “You can’t have a captain coming in and missing games here and there,” Ponting explained. He added that the selectors should now fully support Gill and allow him ample time to establish himself in the role.
