Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have agreed to fully restore diplomatic services, marking a significant step towards mending strained relations between India and Canada. The agreement was reached during a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Alberta on June 17th. This move aims to ease restrictions on travel, trade, and educational exchanges between the two nations. The meeting, the first between the leaders since Carney assumed office in May 2025, comes after a period of diplomatic tension triggered by the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Modi and Carney expressed their commitment to strengthening ties, with Modi highlighting the importance of the relationship and the potential for mutual benefit. Areas such as trade, energy, space, and critical minerals were identified as key areas for cooperation. This is Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Canada since 2015. The visit has also drawn reactions from fundamentalist groups.
