Disturbing details are surfacing about Manojit Mishra, the prime suspect in the Kolkata law college student rape case, including claims of a history of predatory behavior. Reports suggest Mishra, also known as ‘Mango,’ exhibited a concerning pattern of sexual harassment and violence. Former classmates and college juniors have described his behavior as erratic and dangerous. BJP leader Amit Malviya has highlighted Mishra’s alleged connections to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Mishra’s alleged modus operandi involved approaching women with the phrase, “Tui amay biye korbi?” which translates to “Will you marry me?” He was reportedly expelled from the college’s Trinamool unit in 2021 for using this line on campus. One student stated, “This person and his aides were a terror, especially for girls. Authorities knew everything but protected him.” The student also mentioned that complaints of sexual harassment were ignored.

Mishra’s association with the TMC includes his former role as President of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at South Calcutta Law College. He currently holds the position of General Secretary of TMCP in the South Kolkata district. Despite some TMC leaders distancing themselves, Mishra has been seen with prominent TMC figures, including Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law, Kajari Banerjee. His social media activity showcases his participation in various TMC events.

Amit Malviya criticized the TMC’s association with Mishra, stating that the party’s claims of not knowing his background are ‘criminal’. Malviya pointed out that Mishra had been accused of attempted murder since 2013 and faced multiple molestation complaints. Despite this, no action was taken, allegedly due to political protection. Malviya emphasized that Mishra was known for harassing women, making unsolicited marriage proposals, and threatening those who resisted. He questioned how Mishra was given a role in a government college in 2023. Malviya also revealed that Mishra allegedly filmed and shared private moments with women.

The gang-rape occurred at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba, Kolkata, on June 25th. Four individuals have been arrested, including the main accused, and a special investigation team has been formed. Mishra and his accomplices Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukerjee have been charged with rape. The incident has sparked significant political controversy in West Bengal, occurring ten months after the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case.
