Responding to recent sanctions imposed by the European Union, India has asserted its non-alignment with unilateral sanctions and emphasized the need for equitable practices, particularly concerning energy trade. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India does not subscribe to any unilateral sanction measures and is committed to its legal obligations. The government prioritizes energy security for its citizens and stresses the importance of avoiding double standards in energy trade. This stance aligns with previous statements regarding NATO chief Mark Rutte’s remarks on potential secondary sanctions related to Russian oil, highlighting India’s focus on securing its energy needs based on market availability and global conditions. The MEA has cautioned against double standards in this context. The NATO Secretary General had previously urged India, China, and Brazil to reconsider their oil purchases from Russia, suggesting potential secondary sanctions.
