President’s rule in Manipur has been prolonged for another six months, starting from August 13, 2025. This extension follows the initial imposition on February 13, 2025, after CM N. Biren Singh’s resignation, triggered by ethnic violence. The motion to extend the rule was presented by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Rajya Sabha’s Parliamentary Bulletin announced the approval of the motion initiated by Amit Shah, the Home and Cooperation Minister. The motion seeks parliamentary consent to extend the President’s proclamation in Manipur under Article 356 of the Constitution. This extension is for an additional six months, effective from August 13, 2025.

Ethnic tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities since May 3, 2023, have resulted in over 250 fatalities and displaced more than 60,000 people. The main highways in the state, National Highways 2 and 37, which connect Imphal Valley with Nagaland and Assam, pass through Kuki-Zo-dominated areas, leading to disruptions in Meitei movement since May 2023. Additionally, over 6,000 police weapons have been stolen in the state.
