Former US President Donald Trump declared a 25% tariff on India, effective August 1, 2025, along with an unspecified penalty. Trump, in a Truth Social post, criticized India’s trade practices and its reliance on Russian military equipment and energy purchases, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In response, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) stated it is evaluating the implications and will take all necessary actions to safeguard national interests. The MoCI also highlighted ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement and emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Indian farmers, entrepreneurs, and MSMEs. Subsequently, Trump indicated a willingness to negotiate on the tariffs, citing India’s high tariff rates.
