Australia secured a 17-run victory against South Africa in the opening T20I match held in Darwin, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. This win marked Australia’s ninth consecutive victory in T20 internationals, establishing a new record for their longest unbeaten run in the format. The Australian innings faced early challenges, with the South African pace attack putting pressure on the home team. After early wickets, Australia was struggling at 75/6, with Cameron Green’s quickfire 35 from 13 balls being a highlight. However, Tim David turned the game around with a remarkable counter-attacking innings, scoring 83 off 52 balls, including four boundaries and eight sixes. He shared a crucial 59-run partnership with Ben Dwarshuis, allowing Australia to post a competitive total of 178. On the South African side, 19-year-old Kwena Maphaka showcased his talent with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 20 runs – his best T20I figures and the best by a South African men’s bowler against Australia in this format. Chasing 179, South Africa’s innings lacked momentum, though Ryan Rickelton scored a notable 71 off 55 balls. Australia’s bowlers, particularly Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa, proved decisive. Hazlewood’s double breakthrough in the 15th over, including the crucial wicket of Tristan Stubbs, shifted the balance in Australia’s favor. Zampa then added pressure, taking two more wickets, leaving the Proteas with a difficult task in the final overs. This achievement also highlighted Mitchell Marsh’s successful leadership, marking his 22nd victory in 25 matches as Australia’s T20I captain. South Africa now faces the challenge of regrouping to make a comeback in the series.
