The Indian government has begun the process of including Chhath Puja in the UNESCO list. This initiative, spurred by the Chhathi Maiya Foundation, aims to bring international recognition to this unique symbol of faith, environmentalism, and cultural pride. Following the foundation’s initial official request, the central government directed the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) to immediately start the process of nominating the festival for inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, issued a formal order through letter number F.No.U-11/134/2018-UNESCO dated August 8, 2025. The guidance and support of Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, have been crucial in this endeavor.
