In a move to curb fatalities from head injuries among two-wheeler riders, Raipur’s police department has mandated that all motorcycle showrooms must now provide a helmet with every new vehicle sold. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Lal Umed Singh issued the directive, emphasizing that failure to comply will result in strict action. The police have reported over 20,495 traffic citations in the last seven months for riding without a helmet, and despite awareness campaigns and helmet distribution efforts, many continue to disregard safety regulations. Tragically, 190 people have died in road accidents within the same period. As per Motor Vehicles Act of 1989, Section 138, it is obligatory for two-wheeler sellers to provide a helmet with each vehicle. However, many showroom operators have been neglecting this. The SSP’s order clarifies that violating these rules will lead to actions under Motor Vehicle Rules 33-44, which may include suspension or revocation of business licenses. This measure aims to highlight the importance of helmets and reduce the loss of life in accidents.
