Alexander Zverev, the third seed, suffered a surprising defeat in the third round of the US Open, losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, the 25th seed. The German player, a runner-up at the 2020 US Open, initially showed promise, taking the first set and leading in the second. However, Auger-Aliassime demonstrated composure, winning a tense tie-break and ultimately securing the match with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4, 6-4, after a match lasting 3 hours and 48 minutes. Auger-Aliassime expressed satisfaction with the win, reflecting on his history with the tournament and his aspirations. The loss is a significant setback for Zverev, who had reached the second week at Flushing Meadows annually since 2018. It follows his early exit at Wimbledon last month, marking his earliest Grand Slam departure in six years. Auger-Aliassime’s victory is a significant step as he aims for his first Grand Slam title. He will now face 15th-seeded Andrey Rublev in the fourth round.
