The upcoming India vs. Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled for September 14 in Dubai, has ignited considerable debate, primarily due to the ongoing political tensions between the two nations. The backdrop of the match includes the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where numerous Indian tourists lost their lives, an event linked to Pakistan-sponsored militants. This has led to widespread questions and concerns, with many questioning the appropriateness of the match. In response, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified the board’s position, stating that the BCCI is adhering to the Indian government’s policy, which permits Indian teams to participate in multinational tournaments like the Asia Cup and World Cups, but not in bilateral series. Saikia emphasized the potential consequences, including sanctions from international sporting bodies like FIFA, AFC, and the ICC, if India were to boycott these tournaments. He cited examples like Neeraj Chopra, illustrating how individual athletes could face penalties. Despite the current situation, the match is set to proceed as planned.
