Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh has initiated relief efforts to assist flood-affected areas of Punjab. He has utilized his resources to procure essential aid, including boats and ambulances, while also leveraging his network to raise funds. Singh sanctioned the purchase of eight steamer boats through his MPLAD fund to support rescue and relief operations. Furthermore, he personally funded three additional boats. The northern state has been grappling with extensive flooding due to continuous monsoon rains and riverbank breaches, resulting in widespread damage and displacement. Government agencies and volunteers are actively involved in relief operations, as certain areas remain submerged. Singh’s efforts include the acquisition of eleven steamer boats in total. Eight were acquired via his MPLAD fund and three from his personal finances. Each boat cost between Rs 4.5 to Rs 5.5 lakh. He also procured three ambulances to facilitate the transport of seriously ill patients to nearby hospitals. In addition to government support, Harbhajan appealed to his contacts for financial assistance. A sports organization contributed INR 30 lakh, while two of his personal acquaintances donated INR 12 lakh and INR 6 lakh, respectively. Approximately Rs 50 lakh has been raised and donated. As a Rajya Sabha member, Harbhajan is closely monitoring the situation and has committed to providing continued support for recovery and rehabilitation in the affected areas.
