Kulman Ghising, the former CEO of the electricity board, has been selected to lead Nepal’s Interim Government. Ghising, celebrated for resolving the nation’s power crisis, is the likely choice of the protesting Gen Z, positioning him as a frontrunner for Prime Minister. This announcement followed the resignation of KP Sharma Oli from his post, prompted by widespread protests against his government. Initially, candidates like Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah and former Chief Justice Sushila Karki were considered for the leadership role. However, after a nearly four-hour virtual meeting, the Gen Z movement decided to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as their interim leader. The selection of Kulman Ghising represents a surprising turn of events.

Ghising, known as a ‘patriot and everyone’s favorite,’ is credited with ending years of load shedding in Nepal. He served as the former Electricity Board CEO and is an alumnus of the Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, India. He later earned a master’s degree in power systems engineering from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. Ghising’s career advanced significantly in 1994. He was appointed as the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in 2016. He became well-known for eliminating the 18-hour daily power cuts. After a period away, he was reappointed in 2021.
