Initially, Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu, was considered a potential interim Prime Minister of Nepal. Supported by Gen-Z activists, he faced competition from retired Chief Justice Sushila Karki, whose supporters clashed with Shah’s outside the army headquarters. Sudan Gurung’s name was also mentioned early on. Now, a new faction of Gen-Z protesters is advocating for Harka Raj Rai, also known as Harka Sampang, the independent mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, as a candidate. Sampang’s popularity stems from his rejection of VIP privileges, preferring to interact with the public directly. He gained recognition for addressing local issues such as waste management and water supply, which led to his election. Sampang has criticized Balendra Shah for not actively participating in the street protests and instead remaining in the background. He has labeled Shah a ‘coward’ for allegedly shying away from difficult situations. This rift has been further fueled after Nepal’s Army urged protest leaders to present a clear candidate.
