The Asia Cup 2025 faced an unexpected hurdle as Omani bowler Imran Sultan, known for his resemblance to former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, was denied entry to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sultan, who was born in Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan, was set to represent Oman in the tournament. His exclusion has dashed his hopes of participating in the prestigious event. Reports suggest that the reason for the visa denial is linked to his birthplace. Sultan has played two T20I matches for Oman, taking four wickets, and also participated in one ODI. He had previously run away from home to pursue his cricketing ambitions.

Sultan’s journey began with a desire to play cricket, leading him to leave his home. He traveled to Karachi and tried out for the Under-19 team. He impressed the selectors by taking 21 wickets in six matches, clocking a bowling speed of 143 kilometers per hour. A video of his bowling went viral in 2019, catching the attention of an Omani cricket franchise. After performing well in league matches, he was included in the Omani Asia Cup squad, but now, he will miss the chance to play. Oman’s opening match in the Asia Cup is against Pakistan.
