The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia announced their recognition of Palestinian statehood. This decision is likely to draw criticism from the United States and presents a diplomatic challenge to Israel.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the formal recognition of the State of Palestine via a post on X, stating that it aimed to revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis and support a two-state solution.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also announced the recognition of Palestine as a state via a post on X.
In a released statement, the Canadian PM said, “It is in this context that Canada recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel. Canada does so as part of a co-ordinated international effort to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution. While Canada is under no illusions that this recognition is a panacea, this recognition is firmly aligned with the principles of self-determination and fundamental human rights reflected in the United Nations Charter, and the consistent policy of Canada for generations.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also released a statement recognizing Palestinian statehood.
While Israel and the United States have expressed disapproval of the move, the UK Prime Minister emphasized that the initiative is intended to help end the war in Gaza and foster peace.
