In the Indian state of Bihar, a woman known as the ‘Mushroom Lady’ has transformed her life and the lives of many others. Hailing from the village of Tilkari in the Munger district, Beena Devi is a testament to resilience and empowerment. Her journey began with the humble cultivation of mushrooms, a venture that would redefine her existence.

Once facing the challenges of providing for her four children with limited resources, Beena Devi embarked on mushroom farming. This decision not only changed her personal circumstances but also blossomed into a women’s empowerment movement. Today, approximately 70,000 women are following in her footsteps, improving their lives and supporting their families. Beena Devi’s children now have access to quality education. Her initiative has even been acknowledged by Prime Minister Modi in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program, and she received an honor from President Ram Nath Kovind in 2020. Driven by a desire to uplift other women, Beena Devi transformed her farming into a mission, empowering women in her community. Over 100 villages now have women cultivating mushrooms in their fields. Beena Devi’s early struggles were intense, at times lacking even the means for a second meal.

Undeterred, Beena Devi procured mushroom seeds and began growing mushrooms in a small space under her bed. Initially, she faced setbacks but later underwent training at an agricultural university. Applying new techniques, she achieved success in mushroom cultivation, and her income now reaches into the lakhs.
