Palestine has formally applied for membership in the BRICS group, seeking to strengthen its position on the international stage. BRICS, comprising the world’s five fastest-growing economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – is experiencing an expansion in its membership.

According to Palestinian Ambassador to Russia, Abdel Hafiz Nofal, Palestine may initially join as a guest member before obtaining full membership. Nofal stated in a conversation with Russian media that he anticipates Palestine first joining as a guest member before progressing towards full membership.

BRICS has been expanding, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates joining in 2024, and Indonesia becoming a member in 2025. Several other countries, including Palestine, are expressing interest in joining BRICS.

China has responded positively to Palestine’s application. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jianqun said during a press conference in Beijing that BRICS is a crucial platform for cooperation among emerging economies and developing countries. It is a significant force in promoting democracy in international relations. China welcomes more like-minded countries to join BRICS. This statement is seen as a diplomatic boost for Palestine. Experts believe that if Palestine joins BRICS, it will receive stronger support from the countries of the Global South.

Recently, countries including Canada, Australia, Portugal, and the UK, during the United Nations General Assembly, have recognized Palestine as an independent nation. Israel has strongly criticized this move. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear in the General Assembly that they will not accept a “terrorist nation” under any circumstances.
