During his address to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, EAM S Jaishankar emphasized India’s long-standing struggle against terrorism, particularly from a neighboring country. He began by acknowledging the UN’s role in preventing war and upholding human dignity. Jaishankar noted the evolution of the UN since its inception, including the expansion of its membership and its growing focus on development, climate change, and global well-being. He stated that India has faced the challenge of terrorism since its independence. Jaishankar pointed out that major international terrorist attacks have been traced back to a specific country, with its nationals frequently appearing on the UN’s terrorist lists. He cited the recent murder of tourists in Pahalgam as an example of cross-border terrorism and highlighted India’s efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice. Jaishankar stressed the need for deeper international cooperation to counter terrorism, condemning state-sponsored terrorism and urging the choking of terrorist financing. He called for an expansion of the UN Security Council and emphasized India’s readiness to take on greater responsibilities. Jaishankar also discussed India’s humanitarian efforts, including aid to Afghanistan and Myanmar, and its contributions to safe commerce and maritime security. He highlighted India’s commitment to peace, particularly in the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and its dedication to sharing its development experiences, including the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence.
