A special commemorative coin of Rs 100 was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1st to mark the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This is the first instance that the image of ‘Bharat Mata’ has appeared on Indian currency. The coin depicts RSS volunteers in their uniform, bowing before Bharat Mata. Prime Minister Modi hailed the event as both proud and historic. The coin also features the RSS’s motto, ‘Rashtriya Swaha, Idan Rashtraya, Idan Mama,’ signifying dedication to the nation. Accompanying the coin was a postage stamp showcasing RSS volunteers participating in the 1963 Republic Day parade. However, the event faced strong criticism from opposition parties, with accusations of the government glorifying the RSS and promoting a sectarian agenda. The Congress party raised objections, highlighting the RSS’s lack of involvement in the freedom struggle, while the CPI (Marxist) denounced the coin and stamp as an insult to the Constitution, alleging the RSS uses the ‘Bharat Mata’ image to symbolize Hindutva. The CPI (M) also questioned the historical accuracy of RSS participation in the 1963 parade. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh cited Sardar Patel’s letter from 1948 where he held RSS responsible for Gandhiji’s assassination. Prime Minister Modi, meanwhile, emphasized the RSS’s dedication to ‘nation first’ and its support for freedom fighters. The RSS was founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar with the goals of promoting cultural awareness and service.
