Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing sharp criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following claims made by former US President Donald Trump. Trump stated that PM Modi had assured him that India would cease its purchase of Russian oil. Rahul Gandhi, a Member of Parliament from Rae Bareli, accused the Prime Minister of being subservient to Trump, alleging that Modi sends congratulatory messages despite perceived ‘snubs’ from the former US President. Gandhi further suggested that Modi is ‘frightened’ of Trump, pointing to the Prime Minister’s alleged failure to contradict Trump’s statements regarding Operation Sindoor.

During a White House press conference, Donald Trump announced his conversation with PM Modi. “He (Modi) is a great friend of mine. I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia; that’s a big step. Now we’re going to get China to do the same thing,” Trump told reporters. This assertion by Trump has ignited a political firestorm, with Gandhi questioning Modi’s foreign policy approach and his relationship with the former US President. The opposition leader highlighted instances where Modi allegedly conceded to Trump’s agenda, including past diplomatic setbacks and the cancellation of the Finance Minister’s visit to America.
