In a dramatic turn of events at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, Sri Lanka secured a nail-biting seven-run victory against Bangladesh, effectively ending the latter’s tournament aspirations. The high-stakes encounter took place at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. Sri Lanka’s captain, Chamari Athapaththu, was the pivotal figure, delivering a match-winning performance under immense pressure.

Chasing a target of 203, Bangladesh found themselves in a precarious position needing just eight runs in the final over. However, Athapaththu displayed exceptional skill and composure, taking three crucial wickets in the first four deliveries of the over. This incredible spell of bowling restricted Bangladesh to 195/9, sealing a sensational win for Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh’s Nigar Sultana Joty scored a valiant 77, with Sharmin Akter providing solid support with an unbeaten 64. Despite their commendable efforts, the pair couldn’t guide their team over the line as the batting lineup collapsed under pressure in the closing stages.

Athapaththu’s all-round brilliance was on full display as she finished with figures of 4/42, making her the highest wicket-taker of the match and securing the victory for her side. She was ably supported by Sugandika Kumari (2/29) and Udeshika Prabodhani (1/29), who delivered vital breakthroughs.

This crucial win keeps Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive, while Bangladesh’s journey in the World Cup concludes after their fifth loss.
