Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer faces a significant setback, being ruled out of action for at least three weeks due to a rib injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25. The injury occurred as Iyer executed a spectacular catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. He landed awkwardly after completing the catch, impacting his left rib cage.

Initial medical assessments, including scans conducted during the match, indicate a jerk to his rib area. A recovery period of a minimum of three weeks is projected, with further evaluation pending. Experts suggest that if a hairline fracture is present, his absence could extend beyond the initial three weeks. Iyer is expected to report to the National Cricket Academy for rehabilitation upon his return.

The exact timeline for Iyer’s return to play remains uncertain. This poses a question mark over his availability for India’s first ODI against South Africa, scheduled for November 30 in Ranchi. Team management is closely monitoring his recovery, with a potential ‘touch and go’ scenario for the South Africa series if the recovery period stretches close to the match date.

The incident happened when Alex Carey lofted a shot that became a skier towards third man. Iyer, positioned at backward point, sprinted and made a brilliant diving catch. However, the impact of his landing on the turf caused the injury. He received immediate attention from the team physio before being taken for scans.

Despite Iyer’s unfortunate injury, India secured a commanding nine-wicket victory against Australia. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli guided the team to a comfortable chase of the 237-run target, ensuring Iyer did not need to bat. His recovery will be closely watched by the team and medical staff.
