The United States is actively pursuing stronger diplomatic and strategic ties with Pakistan, while unequivocally stating that this renewed engagement will not compromise its robust relationship with India. Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted this delicate balance, emphasizing that cooperation with Islamabad, particularly in counter-terrorism, is a standalone objective and does not diminish the enduring friendship with New Delhi.

Rubio commended India’s adept diplomacy, noting that officials in New Delhi understand the strategic necessity of maintaining relationships with multiple global partners. He characterized this as a sign of mature foreign policy, where each nation cultivates its own set of strategic alliances. The Secretary clarified that discussions to rebuild strategic cooperation with Pakistan began independently of any perceived role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, and are aimed at addressing shared priorities.

“We have worked with Pakistan against terrorism and now aim to expand that cooperation. This will not come at the cost of our strong ties with India or any other nation,” Rubio stated, reaffirming the US commitment to its alliance with India. Recent developments, including proposed investment in a port in Balochistan and growing trade figures, indicate a deepening US interest in Pakistan. The US sees this as an opportunity to expand collaboration on areas of mutual interest, without jeopardizing existing strong alliances.
