Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound gratitude to the Indian people for offering her sanctuary while living in self-exile in India since August 2024. She has leveled serious accusations against Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, alleging that its promotion of “violent and extremist” policies is damaging the vital relationship between Bangladesh and India. Hasina stated that the alleged “sponsorship of extremists” within the Yunus administration poses a significant threat to the long-standing friendship between Dhaka and New Delhi.
In a written interview, Hasina shared her deep appreciation for India’s role in providing her a safe haven following the overthrow of her government last year. Her administration collapsed in August 2024 amidst widespread violent protests fueled by allegations of corruption, power abuse, and opposition suppression. These demonstrations, largely initiated by students and civil society, led to her government’s forced departure.
Fearing for her safety after her residence was reportedly surrounded by mobs and security forces failed to provide protection, Hasina sought refuge in India. This move marked a new chapter in her extensive political career. Hasina further criticized the interim government for banning her party, the Awami League, from participating in upcoming national elections, deeming it an unconstitutional act that disenfranchises millions of her supporters. She warned that Yunus’s leadership could lead to political instability in Bangladesh and jeopardize its relationships with crucial regional allies, specifically highlighting the threat to India-Bangladesh ties due to the alleged backing of extremists.
