Skoda Auto India is gearing up to expand its offerings in the Indian market by introducing more of its globally recognized models. The Czech automaker, which currently offers vehicles in India ranging from over Rs 7 lakh to upwards of Rs 40 lakh, has confirmed that its electric vehicle (EV) plans for the country are on hold. This strategic move aims to cater to a broader spectrum of Indian consumers.

According to a senior company executive, the basic portfolio of locally produced cars will remain consistent for the upcoming year. However, to invigorate the market, Skoda intends to import some of its iconic global vehicles, mirroring the successful introduction of the Octavia this year. While specific model names were not disclosed, Skoda currently retails locally manufactured models such as the Kylaq, Kushaq, and Slavia, alongside imported vehicles like the Octavia and Kodiaq.

The company is experiencing its most robust year in India to date, having sold 61,607 units between January and October. Skoda is committed to maintaining its 2% market share within the domestic passenger vehicle segment and has already surpassed its previous annual sales record of 53,721 units set in 2022. The positive sales momentum, boosted by GST reforms, is anticipated to persist through November and December, with expectations of continued growth.

Skoda is also planning to enhance its existing lineup by introducing more trims for the Kylaq and updating the popular Kushaq and Slavia models. Regarding its electric vehicle strategy, the brand acknowledges its significant global EV portfolio but faces market uncertainties in India, including discussions around Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and evolving EV policies, making a stable, immediate plan challenging. Despite potential delays in the pace of electrification, Skoda affirms its commitment to EVs for the future Indian market, emphasizing that any serious manufacturer must embrace electric mobility.
