The gripping courtroom drama Haq has captured audience attention, particularly its enigmatic climax. Director Suparn Verma has revealed that the definitive meaning behind the film’s final, iconic rose scene is a closely guarded secret, known only to a select trio. In a recent interview, Verma disclosed that Emraan Hashmi (who portrays Abbas), Yami Gautam (Shazia), and Rishika (the production designer) are the only individuals privy to his intended interpretation of the ambiguous ending. The director explained that the rose was a deliberate narrative device, meticulously woven into the plot from the outset. He recalled requesting the rose garden from his designer, who ultimately provided not just the setting but also the ‘punchline’ of the scene. The rose’s significance is rooted in the characters’ journey, beginning with Emraan’s character gifting Yami a rose in their first meeting, a keepsake that remains throughout the legal battles and reappears in the film’s closing moments. Verma intentionally keeps his own meaning private, aiming to foster ongoing discussion and diverse interpretations among viewers, believing that every perspective offered is valid. He also touched upon the casting of Emraan Hashmi for the pivotal role of Abbas. Verma admitted the search for the right actor was challenging, with Hashmi’s name consistently coming up but initially seeming like an improbable choice. He credits a persistent ‘asking the universe’ approach for ultimately securing Hashmi, whose intensity and charisma have been lauded in the film, which draws inspiration from the landmark Shah Bano case.
