The Union Home Ministry has issued a crucial clarification, stating that no definitive decision has been made regarding a proposal to bring the Union Territory of Chandigarh under the direct control of the President. This announcement comes amidst a significant political stir in Punjab concerning potential changes to Chandigarh’s administrative framework. The Ministry assured that no bill concerning this matter will be introduced in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament. The proposal, which is currently under internal consideration, aims to streamline law-making for Chandigarh. Officials emphasized that the move does not intend to alter the existing governance structure or the established relationship between Chandigarh and the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana. A final decision will only be made after thorough consultations with all concerned stakeholders, prioritizing Chandigarh’s interests. The Ministry sought to allay concerns, reiterating that the central government has no immediate plans to present any legislation on this issue in Parliament.
