The most alarming revelation is the alleged directive from some high-ranking police officials, who are reportedly benefiting financially from illicit coal earnings, to ‘eliminate permanently’ key operatives of the coal mafia. This move is reportedly intended to silence individuals who could expose the truth. Information suggests that those being interrogated by the ED are now targets for assassination, designed to prevent the exposure of the illegal activities. This tactic of staging ‘evidence encounters’ in the guise of apprehending criminals has a history in the state. Jharkhand has previously witnessed a Director General of Police accused of orchestrating contract killings and setting new benchmarks for corruption, with even members of the ruling party reportedly making such allegations against him. The ED is urged to exercise extreme caution, as in this environment, those who suppress the truth, rather than those who speak it, hold power.
