Actor Ranveer Singh is currently embroiled in a legal controversy following his imitation of sacred rituals from the film ‘Kantara’. The incident occurred during his speech at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28th, where he mimicked Rishab Shetty’s portrayal of Chavundi Daiva from the movie’s climax. A complaint has been officially filed by a Bengaluru-based advocate, Prashanth Metal, accusing Singh of illegal and offensive actions that have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Tulu-speaking community and millions of Hindus. The High Grounds Police Station has registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The advocate further alleged that Singh made derogatory remarks about the Ullalthi Daiva during his IFFI address. This development comes shortly after Singh issued a public apology, stating his intention was to honor Shetty’s performance and expressing deep respect for all cultures and beliefs. He conveyed his sincere apologies if any sentiments were unintentionally hurt. The ‘Kantara’ films have shed light on the ancient spiritual practice of Daiva worship, a significant tradition in Karnataka’s Tulunadu region, known as Dhaivaradhane. This practice involves invoking divine spirits through intense rituals and ceremonial dances, serving as a vital connection between the human and spiritual realms. The film depicts Daiva as a revered entity, with possession scenes showcasing the ritual’s profound spiritual power and emotional depth for devotees.
