A significant milestone in Indian cinema was celebrated as the iconic bronze statue of Raj and Simran from “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (DDLJ) was unveiled in London’s Leicester Square. This momentous occasion marks the 30th anniversary of the beloved Yash Raj Films blockbuster, cementing its place in cinematic history. The statue, which stands as the first-ever Indian film tribute in Leicester Square, joins a prestigious lineup of global movie legends, including characters from Harry Potter, Paddington, and superheroes like Batman. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who portrayed the legendary Raj and Simran, were present to unveil the statue, sharing their heartfelt emotions. Khan expressed how the film, made with a ‘pure heart,’ aimed to spread love and bridge barriers, resonating with audiences for over three decades. He added that DDLJ is integral to his identity and expressed humility at the enduring affection shown to the film and its stars. Kajol reflected on the film’s lasting impact, stating that seeing the statue felt like reliving a piece of their history and was a particularly special moment given Leicester Square’s significance to DDLJ. The unveiling was attended by key figures including Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani and Heart of London Business Alliance Chief Executive Ros Morgan. Widhani highlighted the pride of seeing an Indian film honored in the UK, recognizing DDLJ’s global cultural influence alongside Hollywood icons. The statue celebrates not only the film’s 30th anniversary but also its continuous record-breaking run in Indian cinemas and its lasting legacy, including a recent stage adaptation in the UK.
