Jewelry shops in Chhattisgarh will no longer allow customers to wear face coverings, including burqas, masks, and helmets, in an effort to improve security. The Chhattisgarh Sarafa Association announced this new policy, a direct response to a recent high-profile robbery in Rajim. The association’s leadership stated that the ban aims to prevent criminals from hiding their identities, thereby aiding police investigations and deterring potential offenders.

“We are taking this step for the safety of our businesses and customers,” said Kamal Soni, President of the Chhattisgarh Sarafa Association. He clarified that the rule is universal and not discriminatory, focusing solely on ensuring that everyone entering a jewelry store is identifiable. The association has noted that many perpetrators of recent crimes have used face coverings to evade detection by security cameras. This decision has received support from many jewelers who have been grappling with increasing security concerns. However, the move has sparked debate among the public, particularly concerning the rights of women who wear face veils for religious observance and others who might cover their faces for protection from the elements. The association is committed to enforcing the policy statewide, and its impact on crime rates and public perception will be closely monitored.
