From the fields of a farmer’s life to the prestigious Padma Shri stage, Professor Mahendra Nath Roy’s remarkable ascent has been marked by unwavering dedication. The chemistry professor and social worker from Kolkata was named among the Padma Awards 2026 honorees, prompting him to shower praise on the central government.

In an exclusive interview, Roy reflected on his unexpected honor: ‘I’m overjoyed. Gratitude to my parents and educators who shaped me. A farmer’s son like me never dreamed of this. My quiet endeavors have been acknowledged by the country and its leadership – nothing tops that.’

A veteran academic, he served as Dean of Science, Arts, Commerce, and Law faculties at North Bengal University and pioneered Alipurduar University. Overcoming financial woes, societal hurdles, and personal trials, Roy’s drive stemmed from a simple goal: spreading joy in communities.

He commended PM Modi’s vision in selecting 45 ‘unknown and unique heroes,’ stating, ‘This award represents countless silent contributors. It’s a brilliant move to bring genuine changemakers into light.’

Joining 10 other West Bengalis like litterateur Rabiral Tudu, artist Jyotish Debnath, and physician Saroj Mandal, Roy’s recognition highlights the diversity of excellence. His narrative is a beacon for aspiring individuals, proving that persistent, low-key service can earn national acclaim under visionary governance.
