The political corridors of Maharashtra are shrouded in sorrow following the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared three days of state mourning, effective immediately until January 30, with all government functions suspended and national flags lowered to half-mast.

Fadnavis, who shared a close camaraderie with Pawar, scrapped his itinerary to rush to Baramati with Eknath Shinde. In emotional remarks to reporters, he hailed Pawar as a leader rooted in the grassroots, beloved for his unassuming nature and tireless efforts.

‘Personally, this is a massive void. Ajit Dada was more than a colleague; he was a steadfast ally through thick and thin. His role in shaping modern Maharashtra cannot be overstated,’ Fadnavis reflected. He emphasized the deep grief engulfing Pawar’s family and the NCP fraternity, pledging unwavering support.

Further details emerged as Fadnavis noted consultations with the bereaved family post-arrival in Baramati to chart the course ahead. Updates to the Prime Minister and Home Minister have been conveyed, eliciting heartfelt condolences from the top leadership.

Fadnavis’s poignant X post captured the raw emotion: ‘Heartbroken by Ajit Dada’s departure in this horrific crash. A true friend, a people’s leader—gone too soon. Maharashtra weeps today. Canceling all engagements; heading to Baramati.’ He also mourned the four additional victims.

With public life pausing in respect, this calamity underscores the fragility of leadership. As Fadnavis and Shinde prepare to honor their fallen comrade, questions loom over NCP’s future and the state’s political equilibrium.
