In a blow to Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 preparations, pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood could sit out the early matches. The tall fast bowler is rehabbing an Achilles tendon problem back in Sydney, away from the Sri Lankan action starting February 7. To mitigate risks, Sean Abbott has been drafted into the traveling reserves.

The injury timeline traces back to a hamstring tweak against England, followed by Achilles complications in recovery. After consultations, the team management opted to let Hazlewood build strength domestically. Selector Tony Dodemaide highlighted the long-view approach: staying home offers better rehab conditions, especially with Nathan Ellis rejoining the pace attack.

Abbott, a seasoned all-rounder with World Cup exposure, steps in perfectly. His recent stint with the team in Pakistan makes him an ideal backup. ‘Sean can step up if needed,’ Dodemaide added, underscoring the strategic depth.

The Baggy Greens are grappling with multiple injury concerns. Captain Pat Cummins remains out with back issues, opening spots for Ben Dwarshuis. Other absences include Matthew Short (replaced by Matt Renshaw), Nathan Ellis and Tim David (hamstring), and Glenn Maxwell (rested for ankle management). Adam Zampa’s minor groin niggle in Lahore was managed cautiously.

As the tournament opener against Ireland looms on February 11, Australia eyes full recoveries for key players like Maxwell, Ellis, and David, all slated to arrive in Colombo mid-week. The 15-member squad boasts firepower with Mitchell Marsh at the helm, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, and more, determined to reclaim glory.

Squad details: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa. Traveling reserve: Sean Abbott.
