Excitement is sweeping through Malaysia’s Indian diaspora as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his official two-day visit on February 7-8. At the invitation of PM Anwar Ibrahim, the trip is poised to enhance India-Malaysia relations across trade, security, finance, and culture.
‘Both the Malaysian government and people are eagerly awaiting PM Modi with open hearts,’ said Ramesh Kodammal, ASEAN India Economic Council Chairman. He noted the decade-long anticipation and the potential to propel bilateral ties forward. With 2023-24 trade volumes approaching $20 billion, and India-ASEAN commerce on an upward trajectory, the visit signals robust economic momentum.
Community voices echo the fervor. A long-time resident recalled Modi’s previous visit 10 years back, emphasizing the significance for the second-largest Indian community globally. ‘His return highlights dedication to our shared heritage and partnerships,’ he remarked.
Another expatriate beamed with pride: ‘This is a proud moment and a prime platform for us.’ They’re organizing a special Bharatanatyam presentation fusing various dance forms.
Rehearsals involve 800 performers perfecting Kathak, Bharatanatyam, ballet fusions. ‘Our two-minute Kathak-ballet piece is the result of weeks of hard work,’ an artist enthused. A choreographer praised her students’ commitment: ‘Even with busy school lives, they’ve excelled in practice.’
The itinerary includes high-level meets with Anwar Ibrahim to advance trade, financial ties, and strategic cooperation. As cultural displays light up the welcome, this visit underscores the deep people-to-people connections driving India-Malaysia friendship into a brighter future.
