Bajaj Auto has announced the resumption of production for the Bajaj Chetak electric scooter after facing disruptions caused by a shortage of rare-earth magnets imported from China. This move comes just before the festive season, ensuring timely scooter availability for buyers and sufficient stock for dealers.
Production of the Bajaj Chetak in July 2025 had decreased by approximately 47 percent year-over-year, reaching 10,824 units due to the magnet shortage. At the time, Bajaj officials warned that production could halt in August if the supply situation did not improve. Now, with the supply restored, the company states it has enough stock to meet demand. Shipments to dealerships have also recommenced, allowing deliveries to proceed without delays, based on existing bookings.
The Bajaj Chetak boasts a premium, retro-based design and a fully electric powertrain. It is equipped with LED lighting, a digital instrument cluster, and smartphone connectivity for navigation and scooter diagnostics.
Powered by an electric motor, the Chetak is well-suited for city commutes and offers good range. Its lithium-ion battery provides adequate mileage for daily use, and regenerative braking further enhances efficiency. The scooter is available in various trims.
The price of the Bajaj Chetak remains unchanged. With the resumption of production, Bajaj is confident in meeting the demands of the festive season. The production restart will also help the company maintain competitiveness against rivals like TVS, Ather Energy, and Hero (Vida).
