Innovative Retrofit System Enables Diesel Engines to Run on 90% Hydrogen

Researchers have developed a novel retrofit system designed to convert existing diesel engines to run primarily on hydrogen fuel. This technology, which is being developed by UNSW researchers, aims to help older vehicles transition to cleaner fuel sources. The system is designed to replace the standard diesel injection system, injecting hydrogen directly into the engine, and also allows for independent control of injection timing for both hydrogen and diesel systems. The system is designed to efficiently utilize low-quality hydrogen. The stratified hydrogen injection technique produces varying concentrations within the cylinder, resulting in reduced nitrous oxide emissions. This approach offers a pathway for businesses to significantly decrease emissions without discarding existing, functional assets. The developers are targeting fleet and generator operators, such as mining operations, that already have access to hydrogen supplies.
