The government has made a stringent decision regarding vehicles older than 20 years. The Ministry of Transport and Highways, through the notification of the Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules 2025, has clarified that the registration renewal fees for such vehicles will be nearly doubled. This will directly affect individuals who still operate vehicles that are over 20 years old. According to the new system, the renewal fee for motorcycles is now 2,000 rupees, up from the previous 1,000 rupees. For three-wheelers or quadricycles, the fee is 5,000 rupees, which was previously 3,500 rupees. Light motor vehicles will now incur a fee of 10,000 rupees, an increase from the earlier 5,000 rupees. Imported two or three-wheelers will have a fee of 20,000 rupees, up from 10,000 rupees. The fee for imported four-wheelers or larger vehicles has been set at 80,000 rupees, compared to the previous 40,000 rupees. Other vehicles will be subject to a fee of 12,000 rupees. It’s important to note that these fees do not include GST. Furthermore, while vehicles older than 15 years can be re-registered, their age cannot be extended beyond 20 years.
