Singer Guru Randhawa, known for popular tracks like ‘Lahore’ and ‘High Rated Gabru,’ is facing criticism concerning his recent song, ‘Azul.’ The music video depicts him as a photography teacher who expresses interest in a student, portrayed in a school uniform. Many viewers have expressed concerns that the video inappropriately sexualizes schoolgirls and normalizes teacher-student relationships.
Amid the controversy, Randhawa responded with a cryptic Instagram Story. He shared analytics for ‘Azul,’ highlighting over 107,200 views within an hour and 27,000 YouTube searches. His caption read: “Azul is Azuling. When God is with you, you only move forward.” While not directly addressing the criticism, the post appeared to emphasize the song’s success despite the backlash. Randhawa has also disabled comments on the video’s Instagram post.
‘Azul’ has drawn criticism for allegedly sexualizing schoolgirls. In the video, Randhawa portrays a photographer taking class photos. Critics accuse him of objectifying minors and promoting harassment, and the lyrics compare a woman’s beauty to alcohol.
Simultaneously, Randhawa’s song ‘Sirra’ is gaining popularity but has also sparked controversy due to alleged defamation of the Jatt community. A local court has summoned Randhawa on September 2 following a complaint about the lyrics. The complainant, Rajdeep Singh Mann, objects to the line, “We are the sons of Jatts. We got opium as our first food when we were born.” Mann argues the lyrics promote drug culture. Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon Music, Instagram, Spotify India, and Warner Music India are among the platforms named in the complaint.
