In a significant push for cultural preservation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced enhanced efforts to supercharge the state’s theatre movement. During the launch of Shiva Sagar Natya Mandir, he outlined a multi-pronged strategy focusing on cutting-edge infrastructure and comprehensive support for performers.

Sarma painted a vision of international-standard cultural hubs where artists access top-tier technology, all while safeguarding Assam’s age-old performance arts. This renewed vigor addresses the challenges faced by traditional theatre in a digital age.

Key projects under the government’s belt include the prestigious Jyoti-Bishnu International Arts Centre, advanced auditoriums at Shankardev and Madhavdev Kalakshetras, and the expansive Lakhimpur auditorium accommodating 1,000 spectators. These additions have not only created opportunities but also elevated Assamese plays to worldwide acclaim.

Crucially, the expansion extends to rural and semi-urban areas through new town halls and community centers, enabling grassroots troupes and emerging artists to shine locally. ‘Decentralization is key to sustaining our theatre beyond metropolitan limits,’ the CM stressed.

Artist welfare takes center stage with financial assistance packages, pension expansions, festival funding, and insurance coverage. Sarma expressed optimism that these holistic efforts will spark a creative boom, perpetuating Assam’s dynamic stage heritage.

The inauguration of the upgraded Shiva Sagar Natya Mandir exemplifies the administration’s dedication to restoring and modernizing cultural landmarks that have long defined the state’s artistic soul.
