Films and series about the publishing world often take themselves too seriously, focusing on exposes or journalistic ethics. They rarely capture the chaotic, self-deprecating humor found in a newsroom. ‘The Paper,’ created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, dives into the antics of a near-defunct newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, struggling to survive. Despite the grim reality of their situation, the characters embrace their failures and desperation without shame, aware their days are numbered. The ten episodes provide a vicarious experience, allowing viewers to appreciate the absurdity of their world. The script masterfully captures the constant changes in a newspaper office, with upper-floor dramas intertwined with the happenings underneath, creating a multi-layered narrative. The series begins with the new editor, Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), facing a comical setback as he’s denied entry to the office. The series is filmed as a mockumentary, attempting to capture the zaniness of the media professionals. The performances elevate the show beyond parody, with each character feeling real. Sabrina Impacciatore, as Esmeralda Grand, the Managing Editor, delivers a standout performance, teetering on the edge of burlesque, making the series a true opera of life.
