Protests against the arrest of social activist Sonam Wangchuk were held in Delhi, mirroring demonstrations in Ladakh. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) organized a candlelight march on Friday evening to condemn Wangchuk’s arrest. The march, led by Delhi state convener Saurabh Bharadwaj, saw participation from a large number of party workers. Bharadwaj highlighted Wangchuk’s significant contributions, including the film ‘3 Idiots,’ which brought him into the public eye. He emphasized Wangchuk’s dedication to social service, noting his work in providing educational opportunities for students. Bharadwaj also pointed out the historical context of the region, where the people of Ladakh and Kargil have consistently stood against external threats, even facing Chinese incursions. He underscored their readiness to defend their territory.

Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh strongly criticized the central government’s actions regarding the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk, who has been advocating for full statehood for Ladakh. Singh described Wangchuk’s arrest under the National Security Act as a symbol of authoritarianism. Wangchuk has been seeking full statehood for Ladakh and Kargil through Gandhian methods, while also advocating for improved education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for the local population. Singh stated that the Modi government is resorting to labeling those who speak up as enemies of the state.

Singh noted that Wangchuk was arrested on Friday. He added that Wangchuk has dedicated his life to the education of underprivileged children. Wangchuk has been demanding that the government grant the people of Ladakh their rights under the Sixth Schedule for the past five years. His demands include education, employment, land rights, healthcare, and full statehood for Ladakh and Kargil.
