In a proactive step against the unrelenting Bihar winter, Patna’s schools for classes 1-5 stand closed till January 13. The order prioritizes the well-being of tender-aged students amid a punishing cold wave sweeping the region.

Announced by the local education department, the holiday extension shields children from sub-zero chills and foggy mornings. ‘Young ones are most vulnerable to hypothermia and respiratory issues,’ explained a senior official. Temperatures have dipped to single digits, with wind chill making it feel even colder.

City schools buzzed with activity earlier this month, but now playgrounds lie deserted. Teachers are adapting with virtual sessions via apps and WhatsApp groups. ‘We’re sharing worksheets and videos daily,’ shared a principal from Danapur.

This measure echoes statewide concerns, as Muzaffarpur and other areas report similar weather woes. The India Meteorological Department warns of continued fog and low visibility, urging caution for all outdoor activities.

Parents appreciate the foresight but worry about learning gaps. Community leaders call for better insulated classrooms in future winters. Meanwhile, older students attend with mandatory mufflers, gloves, and hot water provisions.

Bihar’s winters have grown fiercer, linked to shifting weather patterns. Last year, prolonged cold led to multiple school holidays. Authorities monitor the situation closely, ready to extend closures if needed. For now, Patna’s little ones stay cozy at home, safe from the frost.
