Bihar’s political landscape is buzzing with activity as the state approaches its Assembly elections. The Congress party has just released its second list of candidates, intensifying existing strains within the Mahagathbandhan alliance’s seat-sharing discussions. The party has put forward Shaswat Kedar Pandey for the Narkatiaganj constituency and Qamrul Hoda for Kishanganj. Additionally, Irfan Alam, Jitender Yadav, and Mohan Shrivasta will represent the party in Kasba, Purnia, and Gaya Town, respectively. This move adds another layer of complexity to the pre-election maneuvering.

The Mahagathbandhan alliance has recently encountered a significant setback. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has declared its intention to contest six seats independently, signaling a departure from the alliance. JMM General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya cited strategic reasons and differing party approaches as the basis for this decision. The JMM plans to field its candidates in Dhamdaha, Chakai, Katoria, Manihari, Jamui, and Pirpainti. These areas are strategically located near the Jharkhand border and have a notable tribal population.

Political observers suggest that the JMM’s independent stance could weaken the Mahagathbandhan, particularly in constituencies bordering Jharkhand and those with substantial tribal communities. Such a division of votes might inadvertently benefit the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Despite the prevailing uncertainty and the JMM’s breakaway, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera expressed optimism. He asserted that all matters within the Mahagathbandhan have been resolved, with official announcements forthcoming “at the right time.” Khera assured reporters that finalizations are complete, and the official declarations will be made when appropriate.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA is presenting a unified and well-prepared front for the upcoming polls. The alliance has successfully finalized seat-sharing agreements with key partners, including JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), RLM, and HAM, and has commenced groundwork in various constituencies. A strategic meeting took place where Chirag Paswan conferred with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Patna to strategize election campaigns, highlighting a coordinated and disciplined approach.

With the election dates drawing closer, Bihar is poised for a fiercely contested political battle. Polling is scheduled for November 6 and 11, with the results to be announced on November 14. This period is expected to witness significant political realignments and intense competition for power.
