Following the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, BJP MP Sambit Patra criticized the Congress and other opposition parties, accusing them of holding inconsistent stances on Aadhaar. Patra highlighted that the opposition initially opposed linking Aadhaar with voter ID cards but are now advocating for its use, indicating a shift in their position. He stated this inconsistency exposes their “double standards” concerning Aadhaar’s role in electoral reforms.

Patra referenced the Prime Minister’s prior statements in Parliament supporting Aadhaar to eliminate middlemen, which the opposition had criticized. He further pointed out that in 2022, the Congress challenged the government’s move to link Aadhaar with voter cards in the Supreme Court, arguing it was solely for identification and unsuitable for voter ID linkage. However, he noted, they are now suggesting Aadhaar should determine voting rights and citizenship.

In response to the same court order, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of misrepresenting the court’s decision, sharing the order on social media. Ramesh clarified that the court’s order did not give any stay, as stated on page 7 of the document. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also welcomed the court’s decision, while criticizing sources within the ECI for allegedly misinterpreting the court’s directive. The Supreme Court has allowed the Election Commission to proceed with its Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, while also permitting the inclusion of Aadhaar, ration cards, and voter ID cards as acceptable identification during the process.
