The Chhattisgarh government has prohibited the registration of agricultural land parcels smaller than 5 dismil. The Inspector General of Registration has issued a directive to all district registrars in this regard. This follows the introduction of the ‘Chhattisgarh Land Revenue Code (Amendment) Bill-2025’ in the state assembly, which included provisions to regulate the sale and purchase of land. The new rule has been enforced following its publication in the gazette. Previously, the registration of small land parcels had led to illegal plotting and related issues. However, this new regulation will not apply to urban areas, where land is generally outside the agricultural category. Registrations in urban areas, including for diverted land used for commercial and residential purposes, will continue as before. The amendment bill also grants legal recognition to georeferencing technology, which is being used to create digital maps across the state to resolve disputes related to land demarcation, division, and name transfer. These digital maps will now be considered legal documents, valid in courts and administrative proceedings.
