Police in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, have apprehended a mother and son for allegedly exchanging a fake gold bracelet for a genuine gold chain at a jewelry store. The duo is accused of defrauding a jeweler of a gold chain worth 1.68 lakh rupees by presenting a counterfeit bracelet. The arrested individuals are identified as Savita Singh, also known as Sapna or Sappo, aged 43, and her son, Ishant Verma, also known as Anuj, 23. Both suspects are residents of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

The incident occurred at Dhadiwal Jewelers in Sadar Bazar, under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station. On the evening of September 9th, the mother and son visited the store, purportedly to have the fake gold bracelet repaired. When the jeweler informed them that the bracelet could not be repaired, the woman requested an exchange for a gold chain. Trusting their intentions, the jeweler provided them with a chain weighing 13.880 grams, valued at 1.68 lakh rupees. The pair then left the store with the chain.

Upon examining the bracelet after their departure, the jeweler discovered it was a fake, realizing they had been deceived. The jeweler immediately reported the incident to the police. Responding to the complaint, the police initiated an investigation.

The Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit, along with the Kotwali police, took the case seriously and launched an investigation. They reviewed CCTV footage from the store, which identified a woman and a man, and revealed that they were using a car. Following the leads, the police apprehended the suspects.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had previously committed a similar act in Bilaspur’s Sadar Bazar, at Ajay Jewelers, where they also exchanged a fake bracelet for real gold.
